Drug company funding studies
From Concerned, regarding this post:
EVERY study that is used to determine whether a drug gets FDA approval is a drug company funded study. Just because AZ funded the studies of Seroquel doesn't mean the the data is biased, falsified, or misrepresented.
Check out Philip Dawdy's post on this subject to see another point of view.

Actually, concerned, it's the DEFINITION of biased. AZ has a vested interest in securing a "positive outcome" for these studies. They want to sell their product, just as any private institution does. Independent, objective research it is not.

With the advent of managed medicine, cost-effective care, outcome based medicine and other euphemisms for bad medicine independent research has died a rapid death. Even in academic settings almost all research is drug company sponsored with a clear underlying bias to prove the efficacy of medications pending release or pending a new indication. Positive outcomes equals potential sales, equals money for the drug company, equals future study funding for the researcher.
Medicine has become largely consumer driven- witness the $$$$ being made by laser centers, plastic surgeons and erectile dysfunction cures.(Do you have any idea how hard it is to not joke after a sentence which contains the word
"erectile"?
I will be strong.)
