School's in

This is from TTWS reader Steve, who has personal experience, as I do, with campus psych services.

Report Faults UC's Mental Health Care: Psychological services for students are starved for funding and staff even as serious mental issues are on the rise on campuses, study finds.

This article is right on, Liz. I'm a senior at Berkeley, and the counseling and psychological services at the student health center are so lacking and understaffed that they're mocked by students. Even when I was in an acute manic state induced by an SSRI, I had to wait three weeks for an appointment with a proper psychiatrist. During that time, I was "treated" by the same nurse who had prescribed me the SSRI (for insomnia) over the telephone, and was told to stay on it, because "anti-depressants don't cause that sort of behavior." It was hell. When I finally was able to see a psychiatrist, she spoke with me for five minutes. I was lucky, I recovered from the experience and am now doing fine. But I will never seek help from university health services again. They are disturbingly uneducated about complex mental health issues. Since many mental illnesses tend to first manifest themselves during the university years, it is hugely important to have appropiate services available.
