Local yokels

sanson street lo res.jpg
Okay, this has nothing to do with mental health, and it's supremely local, but I just have to get this off my chest: Why can't the Sansom Street Oyster House spell their own name correctly? The restaurant is down the street from my office, and I pass this sign posted outside their doors every hour or so. And every time I think, "Sanson? Why?" If you can spell Yuengling correctly, how hard is it to spell Sansom?

New name for this blog: The Trouble With Spikole.

I've never seen that spelling, but "Samson" (like the guy with the long hair in the Bible) is ridiculously common as a spelling for the name of that street.

(at least their web address spells the name right. if they'd registered "sansonoysters.com" that would be really embarrassing.)

it's better than samson

Quite a few years back (probably more than 10), I recall a place called 'Caroline's', that was just off, or near Sansom St. A coworker of mine at the time (born and raised in Roxborough), repeatedly referred to this street as: "SAMSON ST". Despite my pointing out the spelling, as we stood under the STREET SIGN, he was adamant in his 'correct Philadelphia pronunciation' of the street.
This must be some type of regional dyslexia.
